Observations of a Professor in scholarship selection committee of UK University

SCHOLARSHIP TIPS

A Million Dollar Advice by a Professor, Dear all today, I met a Pakistani who is professor at a UK university, Dr. Zeeshan Pervez
He has been involved in selection of Pakistani students under different International projects for MS and PhD since past years. This was very rare opportunity that you find some Pakistani professor, who has gone through Pakistani applications at International level. So, I asked him to comment on Pakistani student applications. These were his advices and observations. I am sharing below and I think they are quite useful, If you follow them
1) The main thing in Pakistani applications is Copy and Paste. They do not spend time on making their own innovative or unique lines/arguments. As a professor, you are going through 150, 200 above applications of students and after checking few applications, you start to notice strongly that most of them are following same words and same things over and over. So, if a person cannot spend time in making something new/innovative/unique without copying. How he/she can be given a chance to do MS or PhD
2) Things are written without justification in emails, documents such as Statement of purpose, motivation letters etc, or in response to questionnaires. Things are explained without reasons. Pakistanis do not go for justification of their statements. For example, you are applying to a professor for a position, you should tell / convince professor that how you will be useful to him (not in term of becoming a YES BOSS YEs Boss, you can do anything from dishwashing to robot making), but by giving him reasons such as you have done that specific thesis/project and same kind of work xyz is going in your lab and I can use these to enhance my previous or future work into publication into conference such as abc. some kind of such explained sentences that show that you are the person who is proactive with a plan of some benefits to professor. The second thing is that your future plans should be sustainable. Your words should show clearly that what you will do after doing that degree. Do not show that you will become a Life Saviour after doing degree. But you can give justifications to show the advancement of the research you will do when you go back or apply your research in real life problem in your country or any other that you will target for some journal publications. So, professor should get the idea you are not only a person with a proper plan but have ambitions, which will benefit professor as well later on
3) If you have done something well, such as some project /publication. Explain it well in emails to professors, that he should know that you are good in research/work. So, focus on your strong points and exploit them in front of professors
4) The biggest problem in Pakistani applicants is lack of English scores (IELTS or TOEFL). They have best profiles but they lose best options due to non-availability of test scores. Now almost every country needs IELTS or TOEFL, if universities do not ask for it, embassies have now requirements of IELTS or TOEFL . So please do IELTS, TOEFL before thinking of a scholarship. Do not lose your chances on such things
A professor in a university abroad has many things to do, research, teaching, funding applications and other stuff. Most of the professors are not paid to spend time on selection of students from bunch of student's profiles. So, they cannot give much time to it due to other commitments. So, there can be a factor of looking/finding of a reason to reject. If you are not unique and genuine writer and have not justified well about yourself in documents/emails/questionnaires, and have not justified yourself useful to professor, then professor gets an easy and quick reason to reject you. It happens everywhere.
So please do not give professors your such weaknesses. Follow above points. I am sure you can get scholarship. If you change your attitude and become serious
Thanks
